About Us

Halifax Meals on Wheels has been delivering fresh, nutritious meals for over half a century. Dedicated volunteers put food on the tables of those in Halifax who are unable to prepare a meal for themselves. We deliver fresh chilled meals and warm hearts while providing peace of mind for our clients and their families.

Halifax Meals on Wheels began operations on November 17, 1969. That was when Doris Salton, Ethel Nicholson and Norah Corston delivered meals to six clients. The first was Mulgrave Park resident Michael Murphy whose ability to prepare meals was limited by diabetes and a physical disability.

The seeds of this organization were first sown in the rubble of wartime London when volunteers prepared and delivered meals to families left homeless by the bombing during the Blitz. It’s believed those meals were delivered using wheelbarrows and the service became known as Meals on Wheels. Since that time the organization has grown to be a permanent fixture of volunteer life around the world. There are now Meals on Wheels in Canada, the United States, Australia and Great Britain.

From six meals to thousands per year, Halifax Meals on Wheels has always delivered fresh meals, warm hearts and peace of mind to our clients and their families.
